Dedication

No man is an island; some not even a good peninsula. So I dedicate this page to those who have had the greatest influence on my early musical development.

Although I started the formal study of the piano at age four, even before the tender age I had already learned quite a bit about music from my parents. Lets begin with HARMONY, the HARMONY they demonstrated living together; the HARMONY that prevailed among the members of our family; the HARMONY our parents taught us that enabled us to live with our neighbors, with nature, and with our Creator. Somewhere along the line another musical motif crept in that enabled us to express gratitude to the Creator for the good times He sent and for the courage to accept the challenges from which we would grow.

But it wasn't just HARMONY, cold theory. There was also the warmth of MELODY, beautiful MELODY. Beside learning the structure of HARMONY, intellectually I also began to sense emotionally the beauty of MELODY. With the development of our aesthetic sensitivities, we could now (because of our parents) experience the joy of life, the beauty of life. And the end result was love.

My parents also gave me practical examples: father playing the violin, the mandolin and the accordion; mother, the cello. All of this inspired me to learn the universal language, the language that touches the soul. I am so grateful to them for the many years of childhood piano lessons, the lessons at the Hoch'sche Conservatory in Frankfurt, Germany; and year after year the front row season tickets that exposed me to the great pianists of our time. I loved and admired CLAUDIO ARRAU, especially, when after one of his concerts, I managed to finagle my way backstage, and he took my little hand in his and uttered so gently: "practice, my child, and remember always to play form the depth of your heart." I also heard words of encouragement from the German pianist ELLY NEY, the great Beethoven interpreter, during her visits to Frankfurt, Germany.

All of this gave me a rich background in classical music.

An interest in popular music developed after I moved to America.

I fell in love with Latin music when we lived in the Canal Zone of Panama. A special friend was LUCHO AZCARRAGA, Hammond organist, who, while performing at parties at the Governor's Mansion or a Canal cruise, would nudge me to sit in and play a number with his band. And, of course, I would play my favorite Latin song "Adoro" by Armando Manzanero; years later, it remains my favorite.

This dedication would be incomplete unless I mentioned something about my high-school years in England and a very talented pianist whom I emulated. RONNIE SHA'AG from Tel Aviv was a few classes ahead of me; this pianist extraordinaire used to permit me to turn pages for him. I don't think he ever knew how much of an inspiration he was to me. Thank you Ronnie.

Thank you for permitting me to recognize these great people who had an enormous influence in my desire to learn the universal language, the language that touches the soul. And it all started with the influence of my beloved parents, an influence that will reach into ETERNITY!
